Using Prowl as GMail PUSH

with one comment

So I found an amazing app for the iPhone today.  It’s called Prowl [here’s the iTunes link].  Prowl is a push notification app that takes Growl notifications from your home Mac and pushes them to your iPhone.  I’m using this app for many things but the most useful thing I can think of is using it for GMail push.  You need a Mac with Growl installed (since Growl only runs on Mac *although* there’s a promising Windows client here).  I’ve followed most of these instructions straight from Prowl’s site and it’s pretty simple to setup:

  1. Install Growl
  2. Install GrowlMail
  3. Setup Mail.app for GMail as per GMail’s instructions
  4. Download Prowl on your iPhone [here’s the iTunes link]
  5. Download the Prowl Growl plug-in on your Mac
  6. Follow Prowl’s setup instructions here
  7. Bring up Growl pref pane
  8. Click ‘Applications’, ‘GrowlMail’, and then Configure
  9. Click ‘Notifications’
  10. In the ‘Notification’ drop down, choose ‘New Mail’
  11. Under Display Style choose ‘Prowl’

You need to leave your Mail.app open in order for this trick to work but if all went well, you should see a push notification of new e-mail on your iPhone. App is awesome!  Let me know how this works out for you in the comments!
